{"id":142,"date":"2025-10-14T13:42:36","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T13:42:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.he-icarus-project.eu\/?p=142"},"modified":"2025-10-21T13:06:38","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T13:06:38","slug":"preliminary-design-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.he-icarus-project.eu\/index.php\/2025\/10\/14\/preliminary-design-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Preliminary Design Review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After completing the <strong>System Requirements Review (SRR)<\/strong> earlier this year, the <strong>ICARUS project<\/strong> has now successfully achieved its <strong>second major milestone<\/strong>: the <strong>Preliminary Design Review (PDR)<\/strong>. This represents a crucial step forward in the maturation of <strong>Inflatable Heat Shield (IHS)<\/strong> technologies for future re-entry applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>PDR process<\/strong> culminated in a <strong>Technical Review Meeting<\/strong> with the <strong>European Commission held on 23 September, 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main objective of the review was to formally acknowledge that there is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a consolidated set of requirements to feed the Phase-C work-action (PDR\u2192CDR time-frame);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a design maturity aligned with the level required by ECSS standards for a Preliminary Design Review;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a measurable and tangible technology development to support next project phase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>System design effort from SRR to PDR (Phase-B):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this phase, the team carried out a structured <strong>System Engineering (SE) loop<\/strong> to further develop and consolidate the design definition of the <strong>System and confirm the Mission design.<\/strong> Activities included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Extended <strong>CAD work<\/strong> and detailed <strong>layout optimization<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Detailed <strong>mechanical definition<\/strong> of key structural elements;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Integration of <strong>updated subsystems<\/strong> architecture;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Detailed <strong>avionic <\/strong>and<strong> functional architecture<\/strong>, with update of avionics components, including Health Monitoring System (HMS) and sensors;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Detailed definition of <strong>mechanical and electrical interfaces<\/strong> (internal and external);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consolidation of the <strong>system synthesis<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Significant <strong>technology development progress,<\/strong> supported by successful <strong>breadboards<\/strong> and <strong>engineering model testing<\/strong> of the key innovation elements;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consolidation <strong>of requirements at system and sub-system level;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Definition of preliminary<strong> Manufacturing Assembly Integration and Test (MAIT) plan <\/strong>for the<strong> Phase-D <\/strong>both at system and sub-system level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Current project status at PDR:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>design-maturity <\/strong>achieved at <strong>system <\/strong>and<strong> sub-system level, <\/strong>fully meeting the<strong> PDR expectations<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>work-plan<\/strong> perfectly aligned with the project schedule;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>risks under control, <\/strong>with mitigation strategies in place;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>early procurements <\/strong>already <strong>started<\/strong> to support the upcoming phases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Next Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the PDR successfully completed, the ICARUS project is now entering the <strong>Phase-C<\/strong>, heading toward the <strong>Critical Design Review (CDR)<\/strong> planned to be held in December 2026.
